After surviving the desert, violence in Libya and the Mediterranean, for thousands of migrants the landing in Europe marks the beginning of a new odyssey. From women forced into prostitution to men accused of being suspected boatmen.

“SPECIAL TREATMENT” is a documentary film about the life migrants face once they reach Europe, particularly in Italy.

As happened to the more than 12,000 young trafficked women who arrived with the promise of a job and a decent life and then forced into prostitution.

Not dissimilar was the fate of 2,500 young men accused of being alleged “smugglers,” who ended up in jail on charges of migrant smuggling because they were forced to put themselves at the helm of a boat of desperate people, threatened by the real traffickers, who move the ranks of trafficking while collecting money staying in Libya.

The documentary first aired on Rai3 in July 2023 as part of the series “The Human Factor”. You can see it in its original full version here.
